BRUSSELS – The World
Jewish Congress (WJC) on Thursday enthusiastically welcomed the
European Council’s reaffirmation of its dedication to fighting antisemitism, as
reflected in the Conclusions adopted during the December 2025 European Council
meeting.

European Council Conclusions are the
official statements adopted at the end of European Council meetings, agreed by
consensus among all 27 European Union (EU) heads of state and government. They
set the political direction for the European Union, signal the priorities of
its leaders, and guide the work of EU institutions and member states in the
months that follow.

“The World Jewish Congress commends
the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU and all heads of state and
government for ensuring that the Conclusions affirm the urgent need to counter
antisemitism. Having a dedicated paragraph condemning all forms of anti-Jewish
hatred and calling on member states to intensify their follow-up to the 15
October 2024 Council Declaration on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish
life is particularly important. It demonstrates that Europe’s leaders not only
recognize the seriousness of the threats facing Jewish communities, but also
expect concrete, coordinated action from their governments to address them with
increased speed.

“In the immediate
aftermath of the devastating terror attack that targeted Australia’s Jewish
community during its observance of Hanukah, it is more important than ever that
governments leverage the inclusion of this crucial clause as a catalyst to
enact stricter measures to protect Jewish members of their own countries.

“Over many months, the WJC engaged
closely with the Danish Presidency and key partners, contributing directly to
the inclusion of clear and dedicated language on antisemitism in the European
Council’s Conclusions. The WJC values the constructive cooperation behind this
outcome and thanks its allies for their sustained efforts to keep the fight
against antisemitism at the highest political level, reflecting a shared
understanding that antisemitism threatens not only Jewish communities, but
Europe’s stability and foundational principles.

“The WJC stands ready to continue
supporting the European Union and its member states in implementing meaningful,
effective measures to combat antisemitism and foster Jewish life. We remain
committed to working collaboratively to ensure that Europe remains a place
where Jewish communities not only live securely but flourish as an integral
part of the continent’s cultural and civic fabric.”
