NEW YORK – The World Jewish Congress (WJC) issued the following statement after today’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion regarding Israel’s legal obligations towards UN agencies in Gaza and the West Bank:
“The ICJ has again missed an opportunity to highlight the true source of suffering in Gaza: Hamas.
“Hamas, a terrorist organization, is not just responsible for the October 7th attack on Israel. For decades, the group has cast a long shadow of fear and retribution over Palestinian society. Years of willing cooperation from UN agencies—including UNRWA—only emboldened the group as it tightened its iron grip.
“Now, by continuing to ignore this reality, the court and UN bodies are giving tacit approval to Hamas to continue to use the organization as a human shield and a lifeline for its terrorist activities funded through the abuse of humanitarian aid.
“The World Jewish Congress urges the international community to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization and disconnect UN ties to the organization, rather than advancing one-sided and politicized narratives.”
